PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) began a Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) on USS Hopper (DDG 70) Sept. 27.

During the three-month maintenance period, Hopper will receive upgrades to its Phalanx Close-in Weapons System, water tank preservation and ammunition trunk repairs. The shipyard will also install 25 new flight deck tie-downs and all non-skid mats will be replaced.

"[Hopper's availability] is achievable and on schedule to finish December 21st," said PHNSY & IMF Project Manager Halfred Chang.

According to Chang, the biggest challenge will be testing the integration of the ship's combat systems and engineering system efficiency.

Chang credits the successful start of Hopper's SRA to refined preparation and teamwork.

"The maintenance team had a great pre-planning effort, a 100-hour plan that was executed on time," said Chang. "The contractor and the shipyard team cannot be segregated. We need to integrate in planning and execution."

PHNSY & IMF is a full-service naval shipyard and regional maintenance center for the Navy's surface ships and submarines. It is a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The largest of the Navy's systems commands, NAVSEA engineers, builds, buys and maintains naval ships, submarines and their combat systems.
