Polish soldier killed in mortar fire attack in eastern Afghanistan

Berlin Oct 14, IRNA -- A Polish soldier was killed and another was injured in Afghanistan Thursday following a mortar fire attack on their patrol, the Defense Ministry said in Warsaw.

The dead soldier, identified as 28-year-old Adam Szada-Borzyszkowski, was shot while patrolling a highway in the eastern Ghazni province.

Another soldier was injured and airlifted to a hospital, where he was reported in stable condition, according to the ministry.

Szada-Borzyszkowski is the 22nd Polish soldier killed in the NATO-led military mission against Taliban and al-Qaeda rebels.

There are around 2,600 troops deplyed in Afghanistan as part of the western military operation which Poland joined in March 2002.

New Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has vowed to pull out his country's
troops by 2012.

Most Poles demand an end to their country's disputed military mission in Afghanistan, according to various polls.
