British fatalities continue to mount in Afghanistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Oct 9, IRNA -- The Ministry of Defence in London has announced the death of another British soldier in Afghanistan, bringing the total number killed since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001 to 340.

The latest death, the 95th so far this year, occurred on Friday from an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province, where another soldier was killed last weekend while on foot patrol.

The mounting toll compares with 108 British soldiers killed in 2009, more than double the 51 killed during 2008 and up from the 42 victims in 2007 and 39 in 2006.

Prior to British troops being deployed in Helmand in 2006, only five lost their lives in the first five years of the war, including just two killed in action and three from other causes.

On Thursday, peace campaigners held an unofficial ‘remembrance ceremony’ in London to mark the ninth anniversary of the war, during which the names of thousands of Afghan civilians killed were read out together with the British victims.
