YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded Black Construction/Mace International JV, Barrigada, Guam an $8.9 million firm-fixed-price contract Sept. 30 to repair shoreline revetments at Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territories.
The work to be performed provides for the repair of existing revetments and restores portions of the shoreline to protect threatened infrastructure along 700 feet of shoreline.
"This project will improve the structural integrity of the existing revetment that protects the beachfront infrastructure of the base," said Richard Soriano, NAVFAC Far East Public Works Department Diego Garcia facilities management director. "Without this revetment system, the shoreline will continue to deteriorate at an alarming rate."
In addition to supporting the operational readiness of the facilities located in this area, the new revetments will help mitigate effects of tropical cyclones.
Work is expected to be completed by October 2011. The actual contract award is $8,970,000.
