WASHINGTON (NNS) -- USS Nevada (SSBN 733) received the 2010 Secretary of the Navy Safety Excellence Award for submarines during a ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C., Oct. 4.
Commemorative plaques and the Secretary of the Navy Safety Flag were presented to Nevada (Gold) Commanding Officer Cmdr. Peter Hudson and Chief of the Boat, Master Chief Electronics Technician Michael Nilsen.
"The presence of senior military and civilian officials demonstrates how important it is that we keep our Sailors and department of defense employees safe," said Hudson. "Our Sailors and civilian support team are the Navy's greatest asset and I was very proud to accept this award for the crew and leadership of the Nevada."
Nevada safely conducted numerous high risk events with zero mishaps including more than 1,400 shipyard integrated test procedures requiring more than 6,800 man-hours to complete, restoration of five major subsystems within the strategic weapons system, and 900 missile tube muzzle hatch operations.
Nevada's highly respected safety program was cited by the Naval Safety Center as "best in the submarine fleet."
"I am extremely proud of the Nevada Sailors for their continued focus and effort placed on safety," said Hudson. "In a complex industrial environment with increased risks, the crew did a superb job making sure safety was never sacrificed in the name of production. Safety is an all-hands effort, and the crew consistently demonstrated a 'safety first' mentality."
