USS HALSEY, At Sea (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97) engaged numerous training threats with small arms during a gunnery exercise in the Guam operational area, Oct 1.
During the first event, one of Halsey's MH-60R helicopters provided long-range targeting information to engage a target with Halsey's 5-inch main gun.
"Using the helicopters as spotters allows for stand-off surface fire support and greatly enhances our tactical range," said Halsey Operations Officer Lt. Andrew Koy.
For the second event, Halsey maneuvered astern of USS Shoup (DDG 86) to engage a target with 25 mm and .50 caliber crew-served weapons. Halsey trained her gyro-stabilized, remotely operated 25 mm guns on the target to provide sequential and steady fire as each ship passed the target.
"Our first shot hit the center of the target," said Koy, "it was an excellent training opportunity, and we demonstrated some remarkable shooting."
"I can say with confidence that Team Halsey can successfully engage any threat," said USS Halsey Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Jordy Harrison. "This exercise demonstrated our flexible use of assets, superb accuracy, and tenacity to execute the requirements of this deployment in defense of the U.S."
USS Halsey is currently underway on a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.
The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group consists of flagship USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), embarked Carrier Air Wing 2, embarked Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 and the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71).
