JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast and Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi Public Works Department awarded a $6.7 million base-wide roads repair project Sept. 17 to Bay Ltd., of Corpus Christi, Texas.
"For those of us that live and work on the naval air station, there is no current or future project that will have more an immediate wide-scale impact," said NAS Corpus Christi Commanding Officer Capt. R.F. Pierson. "With improved roads comes safer travel, better drainage and quicker emergency response. I could not be more appreciative of this funding."
The work for this project includes complete reconstruction of Ocean Drive from the near gate to the RV park, reconstruction of Dimmit Island Road and the majority of the roads around the industrial area of the fire department trainer, new motorcycle training course and dog kennels.
"This contract is the result of several senior flag officers, senior enlisted and congressional visitors in the last two years, who have recognized the need for recapitalizing the infrastructure of NASCC," said Public Works Officer Lt. Cmdr. Craig Clutts. "Now we're seeing the fruits of those visits."
Additional work that may be awarded as options within the next two to three months could include reconstruction of First Street from Ocean Drive to Lexington Blvd.; partial reconstruction and seal coat for D and E Avenue; mill and resurface for Fourth/Fifth/Midway/Lexington; and reconstruction of RV Drive.
The work will primarily consist of road repairs including demolition, new storm sewers, reconstruction, hot mixed asphalt and concrete overlay, seal-coating, striping and painting of pavement markings. The Ocean Drive portion has been split into eight phases, and three phases within the Dog Kennel/Industrial area.
"The work may start as early as end of October of 2010," said Clutts. "Phase I and II will affect the portion of Ocean Drive from the North gate to First Street."
These areas will be restricted to two lanes during these two phases, and all tenants and visitors on board NAS Corpus Christi are encouraged to obey traffic signs in the construction zones.
Work is expected to be completed by October 2012.
