USS BOXER, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) rendered assistance to sixteen passengers of a distressed boat found off the coast of Southern California Oct. 1.

The fiberglass motorboat had experienced engine problems on the night of Sept. 30 and had been stranded for 14 hours until lookouts aboard the Boxer spotted it.

Seaman Paola Mojzis was the first Boxer Sailor to sight the vessel.

"I saw the boat and people waving to get our attention," said Mojzis. "There's a shared sense of relief when you have been found and when you've found someone."

Boxer quickly sent a launch to assess their condition and provided food and water to the stranded boaters. Boxer crewmembers helped keep the passengers calm until a Coast Guard rescue unit arrived to provide further aid.

"We really stood tall and did great work out here," said Capt. Frank J. Michael, USS Boxer commanding officer. "There is no page two of two doubt in my mind we saved lives today."

The origin of the boat, its destination and the cause of the mechanical troubles it experienced are still under investigation.
