WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington awarded an energy-savings project Sept. 28 for $499,700.

Washington Navy Yard's visitor center will get an energy makeover, to include the latest in energy efficiency and energy renewable technology.

The goal of the project is to get the building as close to energy neutral as possible; in other words, to produce as much renewable energy that is purchased from the traditional grid.

The contract was awarded to Siltek, Inc. of Herndon, Va., an 8(a) small business. Work will include installing electrochromic windows that can be darkened or lightened electronically, thermal barrier paint with microscopic glass beads that reflect heat energy and solar daylighting that can be used in place of electric lighting when sunlight is available. A small wind turbine will also produce renewable electrical power.

"Most important at this stage is collecting information on all of the different technologies we want to use, including specific products and manufacturers for basis of design purposes," said James McCollum, NAVFAC Washington regional resource efficiency manager. "On-site renewable energy will be added to generate as much energy as the site allows with on-site solar, wind, and geo-thermal."

Siltek will begin with an energy audit to establish baseline energy consumption. Planned upgrades include visual displays which will allow monitoring of energy consumption and power generation.
