Norfolk, VA (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic awarded a $24.9 million firm-fixed-price contract to F&S Mechanical and Plumbing Services, Inc. of Tyrone, Ga. Sept. 27 for construction of the Vertical Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 (VMMT-204) maintenance hangar, Phase Three.

This two-part project is the third and final phase for the construction of Building AS-508.

"The first stage is raising the height of the Air Traffic Control Tower to meet current and future needs of MCAS (Marine Corps air Station) New River," said Tom Mullen, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic project manager. "The second stage is the construction of the hangar addition for AS-508."

The work to be performed on this project provides for the extension of the existing air traffic control tower by 20 feet in height, and the design and construction of a multi-story aircraft maintenance hangar addition to provide hangar bay, shop space, flight line operations and maintenance functions.

The Phase One and Phase Two portions of AS-508 house the VMMT-204 squadrons, a training squadron for the MV-22 Osprey. The addition will temporarily house the VMX-22 squadron.

"The addition will provide the user with an updated facility with upgraded support equipment," said Mullen.

This 46,263 square foot addition replaces Building AS-504, a 60 year old facility, and will join the existing aircraft parking apron and incorporate a multi-story crew, equipment and administration area at the rear of the hangar bay.

Furthermore, the project will attain Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) Certification by incorporating features such as low-E windows, high efficiency match load HVAC, and automated light dimming in hangar bay.

Work is expected to be completed prior to Sept. 2013.

NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design and construction for U.S. Navy shore facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region and provides the Navy's forces with the operating, expeditionary, support and training bases they need.
