From Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) awarded two renewable energy contracts in September to construct large solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at Naval Support Activities (NSA) Naples, Italy and Souda Bay, Greece.

The new systems will supplant existing fossil-fuel energy sources at both facilities when completed.

A $1.6-million Energy Conservation Investment Program (ECIP) contract to construct a solar PV system at NSA Souda Bay was awarded to Greek contractor Michael M. Tsontos, S.A. Sept. 8. Upon completion, this project will provide seven free-standing solar car ports with an overall capacity of 200 kilowatt, producing approximately 275 megawatt-hours per year – converting enough of the sun's power to run an average of 27 U.S. homes.

The second system will be installed at NSA Naples, where one parking garage and several other buildings will be covered with 300kW solar PV panels that will generate about 390 MWh per year – enough power to run an average of 39 U.S. homes for a year. This ECIP contract, worth approximately $2.2 million, was awarded to Italian firm Lotos S.r.l. Sept. 24.

"We're excited about these projects. They represent a giant leap for EURAFSWA into the clean, green, sustainable, renewable world," said Bryan Long, NAVFAC EURAFSWA's regional energy program manager.

"Alternative energy sources are the way of the future and it's a good feeling to be involved in advancing technologies that will benefit our environment and save tax dollars. Renewable energy, coupled with energy conservation projects, is just the beginning of a trend in how we will produce and consume energy in the future."

NAVFAC EURAFSWA executes over $650 million a year in construction, professional engineering and facilities services for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Defense and NATO commands in those countries throughout Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia where the Navy is the DoD lead agent for Military Construction.
