Curfew reimposed In Kashmir

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Srinagar, India, Oct 3, IRNA -- Curfew was reimposed in most parts of Kashmir valley Sunday apparently to thwart Hurriyat Conference call for a march to northern Baramulla district today.

The inspector general of police Kashmir had hinted at enforcing curfew on Sunday last night as according to him police apprehended a threat to law and order.

A strict curfew is being enforced with police and paramilitary CRPF personnel deployed in thousands across Srinagar and other towns preventing people from venturing out of their homes, reports said.

Everyday business had resumed in most of Kashmir after nearly 20 days on Saturday as the government lifted curfew on a one-day reprieve in the ongoing strike granted by the Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani, even as the death of an injured victim in hospital shut down several localities in and around his native Sopore town in north Kashmir.

Meanwhile at least four persons were injured when government forces opened fire after protests broke out during a search operation in Shopian in south Kashmir Sunday morning.

According to initial reports, soldiers cordoned off Nagbal village in the district at dawn Sunday to conduct searches for militants in the area, police sources here said.

Hundreds of residents of the village were assembled in a field. One report said when some people resisted forcible parade and raised pro-freedom slogans troops opened fire.

Police however denied that the troops fired at the assembled people saying soldiers fired few rounds in air to control the situation.
However doctors at a Srinagar hospital said two injured 18-year-old girl Salima Yousuf and 19-year-old youth Aamir Ahmed were brought there with fire arm injuries.

Atmosphere in the area was surcharged with people still protesting when reports last came in.
