SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Officials from the Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Environmental Department hosted an Environmental Green Summit, Sept. 29.

The summit was a collaborative meeting to both educate and inform the Navy and local community of the green projects occurring both at Naval Base San Diego and other San Diego Naval bases.

To kick off the summit, Capt. Rick Williamson, NBSD commanding officer, explained how the base is on track towards a 50 percent reduction goal in energy with various practices.

Practices include light emitting diode (LED) technology replacement, Leadership in Energy and Environment Design standard construction for buildings, and high diversion rate for construction and debris on base.

As part of the summit, the San Diego Gas and Electric's Commercial & Industrial Services presented Naval Base San Diego with a rebate check of $147,750 for reducing its electrical consumption by switching to LED lighting.

A representative from the NBSD Solid Waste Management Program also explained how the Department of Defense is tracking solid waste reduction for minimization of greenhouse gas and not just saving landfill space.

"Every command is requested to participate in the installation's recycling efforts to strive for the 50 percent goal of reduced waste for the next fiscal year," said Ted Schleutker, a member of Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest's Solid Waste Management Program.

"Most of the things we throw away can be recycled," said Schleutker. "Call solid waste coordinators if you are unsure what can and cannot be recycled."

Topics were not limited to shore facilities.

Ensign Sophi Kim, the recycling program coordinator aboard USS Makin Island (LHD 8), also explained the many ways Makin Island's program finds ways to recycle on a ship and to raise awareness on the importance of recycling on and off the ship.

Other base environmental programs discussed during the meeting were the Transportation Incentive Program, Fleet Industrial Supply Center recycling program, Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office turn-in program, and the local furniture reuse program.
