Kosovo official dismisses reports of premier's possible resignation

RIA Novosti

06:09 01/10/2010 SARAJEVO, October 1 (RIA Novosti) - Kosovo's deputy premier Hajredin Kuci dismissed media reports that premier Hashim Thaci may also resign days after the country's president quit his post.

"All such reports are just rumors," Kuci told journalists.

Reports of Thaci's resignation come days after president Fatmir Sejdiu stepped down after the Constitutional court ruled that he breached the constitution by keeping a party post while in office.

The online version of the Koha Ditore newspaper said citing anonymous sources that Thaci may resign as parliament of Kosovo postponed debates on privatizing one of the largest companies, Post and Telecom of Kosovo (PTK).

Thaci's resignation would automatically lead to early elections in the country.

Experts say political tensions in the ruling coalition between the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) led by the ex-president, and its coalition partner, Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo, intensified after Sejdiu's resignation.

LDK reportedly proposed deputy premier Ram Manaj to the post of the president, but observers say the two coalition partners are unlikely to agree on the future president's candidacy. The parties also disagree about whether early elections should be held this year.
