Kosovo President Resigns After Court Ruling
September 27, 2010
Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu has announced his resignation in the wake of a Constitutional Court ruling that said he violated the constitution.
Kosovo's president is elected by parliament and has a mainly ceremonial role.
Sejdiu, 58, had been president of Serbia's former province since 2006.
The court said on September 24 that he had violated the constitution by simultaneously holding office and the leadership of his party, the Democratic League of Kosovo.
The ruling came amid a leadership challenge in the party before a general election scheduled for next year.
Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a move that is contested by Belgrade.
