US asks Bangladesh to help train Afghan police forces

New Delhi, Sept 27, IRNA -- US has asked Bangladesh to send combat troops to Afghanistan to help the multinational forces bring stability in the war-torn nation.

Besides deploying troops, Washington also wants Dhaka to assist in training Afghan law enforcement agencies and provide economic and development assistance to the country, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry officials as said in Dhaka.

The American request was made during meetings in New York on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly session between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke.

Describing Bangladesh as America's important friend, Holbrooke told her that US needed help of Bangladesh to ensure security in Afghanistan, a government statement said.

The Bangladesh Foreign Minister said Dhaka would do its best to help restore peace in Afghanistan, as calm in the war-torn nation will lead to the stability in South Asia.

She said that Bangladesh has already offered to send teachers and doctors there.

She assured Holbrooke that the Foreign Ministry will follow up the issue.

They also discussed the flood situation in Pakistan.

Moni informed him that Bangladesh has sent medical teams there to extend medical services among the flood victims.
