VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- The Navy hosted a Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership (NCPDLP) conference Sept. 21-22 at the Little Creek Snug Harbor Conference Center to discuss current Navy education policies and new initiatives recently implemented at Navy College Offices.
Coordinated by Naval Education and Training Command's (NETC) Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD), the event brought together education specialists from the Navy as well as from colleges and universities throughout the nation.
During his opening remarks, Rear Adm. Arnold Lotring, NETC chief operating officer, welcomed partner representatives from 39 academic institutions that provide associate- and bachelor's-level degrees to Sailors through distance learning (DL).
"In the 21st century, education is all about access," said Lotring. "You are providing our Sailors access to education through your participation in the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership."
The goal of the NCPDLP is to support the lifestyle of today's mobile Sailor, as well their education goals. Courses are delivered in a variety of formats, such as CD-ROM, videotape, paper, or via the Web.
The degrees offered through NCPDLP must be relevant to a Sailor's rating and must make maximum use of their military professional training and experience to fulfill degree requirements.
The partnership allows Sailors pursuing a degree within their career field to gain non-traditional course credits, as opposed to someone who is working on a degree outside of their career field.
"CPPD and their Navy College Office professionals located worldwide are excited to offer Sailors these voluntary education opportunities through our distance learning partners, in addition to all our other education partners," said Dr. Mary Redd-Clary, CPPD Navy Voluntary Education Program director.
CPPD recently added six new members to NCPDLP, increasing the number and diversity of degrees available to Sailors. Colleges and universities seeking to join the program are reviewed by CPPD and then, once accepted, sign a memorandum of understanding with the Navy that ensures Sailors have access to the most flexible degree options possible.
"Distance learning partners provide Sailors another option to obtain a degree and to become lifelong learners," said Redd-Clary. "This opportunity is important to the individual's personal and professional development."
The NCPDLP members for 2010 are: American Military University, Brandman University, Central Texas College, Charter Oak State College, City University of Seattle, Coastline Community College, Columbia College, Dallas County Community College, ECPI College of Technology, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Empire State College, Excelsior College, Florida Community College, Jacksonville, Fort Hays State University, Governors State University, Hawaii Pacific University, Liberty University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Olympic College, Roger Williams University, Saint Joseph's College of Maine, Saint Leo University, San Diego City College, Southern New Hampshire University, Strayer University, Thomas Edison State College, Tidewater Community College, Trident Technical College, Troy University, TUI University, University of Incarnate Word, University of Maryland University College, University of Oklahoma, Upper Iowa University and Vincennes University.
"NCPDLP is just another great way to take advantage of education programs the Navy has available for Sailors," said Redd-Clary. "CPPD and the Navy College Program are responsible for a variety of education programs, including but not limited to, the administration of the Navy College Offices located around the world, as well as the operations of the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education, and United States Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP).
Sailors interested in starting on a degree or taking advantage of any of these educational opportunities can obtain information about the programs and locate any of the worldwide Navy College Offices by visiting www.navycollege.navy.mil or by contacting the Virtual Education Center 1-877-838-1659 or e-mail VEC@navy.mil.
