Israeli Police Enter East Jerusalem Mosque Compound
22 September 2010
Israeli police and Palestinian rioters clashed in East Jerusalem Wednesday, including on a holy site for Muslims and Jews, after an Israeli security guard killed a Palestinian in an Arab neighborhood.
Police briefly entered Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound to quell violence that broke out after the funeral of a Palestinian who was shot to death earlier in the day. The site is known to Jews as the Temple Mount.
About 1,000 police were deployed throughout East Jerusalem, wielding tear gas and water cannons against rioters who threw stones and set at least two cars on fire.
The dead Palestinian was a protester who was shot and killed Wednesday by an Israeli security guard in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.
Authorities say the guard opened fire on a group of Palestinians that had blocked his car and pelted it with stones, killing a 32-year-old man.
Two other Palestinians were wounded in the incident.
Authorities say tensions have been high in recent weeks in the Silwan area over proposed settlement construction.
Israel captured East Jerusalem, along with the West Bank, from Jordan in the 1967 war.
