SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 7 held a change of command ceremony at the command's compound aboard U.S. Naval Base Guam Sept. 17.

Cmdr. David Suchyta relieved Cmdr. Bryon Johnson as MSRON 7 commanding officer.

During the ceremony, Capt. Richard Daniel, commander, Maritime Expeditionary Security Group 1, spoke of MSRON 7's protection of the hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and the medical personnel from partner nations during Pacific Partnership 2010, as well as the training they provided to foreign maritime police forces.

"Their hard work significantly contributed to the well being of Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste for years to come," Daniel said. "They imparted a lasting and positive impression of the United States across the entire Southeast Asia region and advanced our nation's strategic goals."

In recognition of Johnson's performance and service, Daniel presented him with the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award). Johnson had led the command since March 2009.

Speaking before MSRON 7 Sailors and guests, Johnson recognized his supporters and the friends he made during his tour on Guam. Johnson also thanked the mayor's office and residents of the command's sister village of Sinajana for partnering with them during community service projects at Sinajana.

Johnson welcomed the dozens of high school members of Father Duenas Memorial High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, who attended at his invitation, and thanked them for allowing MSRON 7 to take them on tours and train with them at the command.

"I really do hope that you continue to follow the paths you have chosen and that you will discover that a career in the military is truly enriching and a deep experience that will last you throughout your entire life," Johnson said.

After thanking his wife and family and the families of MSRON 7 Sailors for their sacrifices, Johnson credited the men and women under his command for their dedication and professionalism.

"I will miss you all and look forward to seeing you all out in the fleet," Johnson said. "Never forget that you truly are a band of brothers and sisters on the frontlines of our nation's global war on terrorism. Never forget that if you work hard together as a team, you will be able to accomplish anything."

Johnson's next assignment is to report to U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. After the official reading of orders, Suchyta reminded MSRON 7 they are the "nation's sea power, ready guardians of peace [and] victorious in war." Suchyta said they would meet that challenge together.

"To be ready and victorious, we must be expeditionary," Suchyta said. "In other words, we must be able on short notice to pack up, go to a foreign land, sustain ourselves, and accomplish the mission."

MSRON 7 provides the Navy and nation with rapidly deployable detachments for force protection of personnel and assets as well as anti-terrorism operations.
