BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Earlier this month, the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC)and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)announced all publication clearances will be submitted through a joint NNMC/WRAMC option on the Institutional Review Board Network (IRBNet) starting Sep 1.
When submitting material for publications to the NNMC/WRAMC Publication Committee, staff members will no longer need to receive separate clearances from both facilities.
Requests for clearances used to be submitted on paper and multiple departments would have to review and approve the request, said Luis Calvo, program analyst in the Responsible Conduct Research Service (RCRS) office at NNMC.
"The paper-based system greatly slowed efforts to investigate in a timely manner, which sometimes caused anxiety in staff waiting for their works to be approved. The new integrated system will streamline the process," said Calvo.
Authored works include oral and written material that is intended to be published or presented to the public. During a typical investigation of submitted works, the IRBNet administrator will ensure that the proper departments review all relevant material. This ensures accuracy and makes sure that the body of work doesn't violate the privacy of American citizens or U.S. government personnel and their families. It also guarantees that works aren't contrary to law or negatively affect national security.
Calvo said that this significant change in business practice will help facilitate a closer working relationship between NNMC and WRAMC.
