Srinagar, India, Sept 17, IRNA -- Two more protesters were shot dead on Friday morning by the Indian armed forces in Kashmir where a punishing curfew continued its stranglehold over the entire population for the sixth consecutive day.
A police spokesman said in Srinagar that two men were shot dead, one in Beerwa town in central Kashmir and another in Tappar village of north Kashmir, after they came out defying curfew and hurled stones at security forces patrolling the streets.
Hospital sources in both the places said at least three more injured were in critical condition.
The dead have been identified as 22-year-old Fayaz Ahmed and 33-year-old Ghulam Rasool.
With the new deaths in the police firing on Friday the toll in past three months of unrest has now mounted to 98. More than 1500 people have been injured during the period.
Meanwhile, Indian army said it shot dead seven militants in last 24 hours, five in Tral area in south Kashmir and two in Gurez valley in north.
A Defence Ministry spokesman in Srinagar described all the seven as Muslim militants who died fighting Indian armed forces.
He said army has killed 30 militants in past fortnight alone in various areas of Kashmir.
While a mass upsurge against Indian rule is sweeping Kashmir with no signs of any let up army too has stepped up its operations in remote areas and jungles against Muslim militants whose number is not known.
Neither is there any independent verification available of army claims.
The current upsurge began immediately after the killing of three Kashmiri villagers in a fake encounter by the army in early June this year.
