Kazakh president to stand for re-election in 2012
13:15 16/09/2010 ASTANA, September 16 (RIA Novosti) - Long-serving Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will stand for re-election in 2012, his political advisor said on Thursday.
According to the 2007 amendments to the country's Constitution, Nazarbayev is entitled to run for re-election indefinitely, Yermukhamet Yertysbayev said in an interview with the Kazakh Svoboda Slova newspaper.
He dismissed media reports that a referendum on making Nazabrayev's term in office indefinite will be held instead of the election.
"It's all rumors," he said.
The current term in office is seven years, but from 2012 on it will be reduced to five.
Nazarbayev has been in power since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
