Death toll in fresh Kashmir violence reaches 14

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Srinagar, Sep 13, IRNA -- Government forces are battling Kashmiris who are out in the streets and last reports said 13 people have died in police and CRPF firing since this morning. Hundreds more are injured many of them battling for their lives in various hospitals.

Police confirmed 13 deaths in demonstrations which were partly fueled by a report of a Quran being desecrated in the United States.

The death toll Monday was the highest since new protests against Indian rule broke out in June this year.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators chanting God is Great and Go-India Go thronged streets defying shoot at sight orders since early today. People poured into streets despite the toughest curfew which had been clamped on Kashmir after pro-freedom demonstrators occupied the city centre briefly on Eid day.

Violence broke out at many places with protesters torching government buildings and attacking police posts.

Police said security forces opened fire to control the situation resulting in the death of 13 people.

Six persons were killed in Tangmarg and one in Bandipur in north Kashmir.

Three youth were killed in Pampore in south Kashmir.

Two more died in Humhama in Budgam district while an eight year old died in Chrare Sharief.

In Budgam agitated police caught hold of a police constable, Davinder Singh, and given a severe thrashing. He died in hospital.

With fourteen more killings today death toll in the ongoing Kashmir unrest which began on June 11 has mounted to 85.
