PUERTO SANTO THOMAS, Guatemala (NNS) -- U.S. military personnel and civilian volunteers have joined together in Continuing Promise 2010 (CP10) to provide humanitarian assistance in Guatemala from Sept. 2-12.

CP10 provides a unique opportunity for the military and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to partner and send a strong message of commitment to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nearly 40 NGOs are participating in the mission by donating supplies and volunteers, including The Greitens Group Foundation, based out of St. Louis.

The Greitens Group Foundation was founded by Navy SEAL Eric Greitens, who has served on humanitarian missions in eight countries around the world, including Rwanda, Bolivia and the Gaza Strip. Through his humanitarian work, Greitens realized the importance of individuals utilizing their skills to help others in the international community.

The Greitens Group Foundation provides travel grants to individuals interested in doing humanitarian work around the world. The foundation's aim is to assist individuals in giving back to the international community. The Greitens Group Foundation will be sponsoring a total of 10 volunteers, including translators, medical students and international humanitarians.

"This trip has been an incredible opportunity for me to learn more about helping others," said Sarah Clabeaux, an engineering student at the University of California-San Diego, who is sponsored on this mission through The Greitens Group Foundation. "I've been working with the Seabees, and it's been really amazing to not only work side-by-side with the military, but also to see how much of an impact we are making in the local communities we are serving in Guatemala."

In addition to providing engineering assistance, military and civilians on this trip are also providing medical and dental care, as well as veterinary support.

Continuing Promise is an annual humanitarian civic assistance operation supported by the U.S. and international military medical personnel, U.S. government agencies, regional health ministries, NGOs and U.S. academic institutions.
