SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded Dynalectric Co. of San Diego a $2.4 million Recovery Act funded contract Aug. 31 to construct street and parking solar lighting at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego.
"This project at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will not only provide jobs for local contractors, it will provide an environmentally conscious energy source that relieves demand on the strained electrical grid." said Dan Tokatlian, NAVFAC Southwest project manager for the project. "I'm fortunate to be in a position where I can directly contribute toward improvements to the air station's infrastructure, green energy goals and the administration's goal to put people back to work."
Dynalectric Co. will replace traditional street and parking lot lights in hangar and barracks parking lots with new solar powered parking lot lights. The new solar powered parking lot lights will meet the requirements of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and a presidential executive order that directs federal agencies to implement sustainable practices for energy efficiency, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and use of renewable energy.
"Dynalectric San Diego is proud to be a part of the solar parking lights project at MCAS Miramar," said Channey Doud, executive vice president of Dynalectric. "Through our use of the latest LED (light-emitting diode) and photovoltaic technology this project will improve the quality of life for the military personnel who live and work on base, while also working towards the Department of Defense goal to reduce the military's reliance on fossil fuels and enhance America's energy independence."
The contractor will complete work by August 2011.
