VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- The mission of the U.S. Navy Reserve is to provide mission-capable units and individuals to the Navy-Marine Corps Team throughout the full range of operations from peace to war.

Navy Operational Support Centers (NOSC) are tasked with ensuring the smooth transition of Navy Reservists who get mobilized for deployment to active duty, and NOSC Norfolk is no exception.

In the Mobilization Department at NOSC Norfolk, there are Full Time Support staff whose job is to help the Reservist get mobilized - a process that starts well before the actual mobilization of the Reservist takes place.

The Sailor is contacted by the Mobilization Department and informed that they are being mobilized. The Sailor's status is changed to RE-1 which electronically informs the Bureau of Navy Personnel that the Sailor has been notified.

"I find out the Sailor has been mobilized, I screen their record for any disqualifying conditions, I make appointments for them to get all their medical requirements completed, they get those completed and they mob (mobilize)," said Mobilization Department Assistant Leading Petty Officer Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Dona Hubbard.

After the Sailor is informed of the mobilization requirements, it is up to the Sailor to complete them.

Any medical condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pap smears for females, any orthopedic condition, or any condition that is considered unstable, can disqualify the Sailor from mobilizing.

While the Reservist is mobilized, the NOSC maintains contact with the Sailor's family to make sure they are being taken care of.

NOSC Norfolk's mission is to manage, train and provide administrative and logistical support to over 3,000 Reserve Component Sailors assigned to 137 units, ensuring maximum readiness and coordination to meet the needs of the fleet.
