NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples' Public Works department added two new recycling collection centers for residents at the Support Site Aug. 1.

In an effort to stay green, keep the site clean and increase recyclable output, NSA Public Works department located the two new recycling centers at NSA Naples Elementary School's parking lot and the Support Site's North Park area. Each center has two main containers, one for separated plastics and separated aluminum, and the other for paper and cardboard. Smaller bins for separated glass and compost are also available.

Assistant Public Works Officer, Lt. Jonathan Nieman explained why NSA officials decided to change the way the Support Site recycles.

"The problem we had with the previous arrangement was that recycling points would get contaminated," said Nieman. "Recyclables would get mixed up and treated like trash, so now what we've done is centralize the two recycling points so that all the recycling will be clean and everything will get picked up."

Nieman also made the point that city workers are allowed to pick up an infinite amount of recyclables, but with unsorted trash, there is a limit after which no more trash gets picked up. This explains the amount of unsorted trash in the wrong places of the Support Site.

"The goal is to increase the overall amount of recyclables collected at the Support Site," said Nieman. "This would drastically reduce the amount of trash sitting around."

Nieman also stated, "By the end of this year, the local community needs to have 50 percent of its urban waste recycled. If not, there will be fines."

Civil Engineer 2nd Class (SCW) Casey Matthews, a Support Site resident, commented on the new centers and emphasized the need for residents to recycle.

"I think it's important to be a part of the community and do our best to keep the base clean by recycling," said Matthews. "So far, the recycling centers are doing pretty well. We're just trying to get the word out because the centers are fairly new and not everybody knows about them."

When residents do recycle, Nieman offered some advice.
"I would recommend sorting by local regulations," said Nieman. "Here at the Support Site it's glass, plastics, metals, and paper and cardboard. The other, most important thing is to crush and compact whatever you can because than we can increase even more the amount of trash we put out."
