Two British soldiers die from explosions in Afghanistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Sep 6, IRNA -- Two British soldiers have died from separate explosions in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence in London has announced.

One soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade while an operation to disrupt insurgents in the northern Nad Ali district of Helmand province on Sunday.

The other died after being flown back to a UK hospital of injuries he received in an explosion while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district on August 24.

A total of 334 British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001, all but five have died since UK forces were first deployed in Helmand province in 2006. The number includes 89 who have died so far this year.

A majority of British deaths have been caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) often roadside bombs, while almost a third has been killed in and around Sangin.

Last Friday, Britain’s most senior commander in Afghanistan warned that violence in Afghanistan would get worse before it gets better, saying progress against the Taliban had been 'hard, slow and variable'.

'We are going up the hill into the enemy at the moment,' Lt Gen Sir Nick Parker said. 'This is a complex counter-insurgency. There are a large number of different actors and it is a resilient enemy,” he told the BBC.
