LIMON, Costa Rica (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines embarked aboard the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) volunteered to be part of community outreach efforts in Costa Rica Aug. 23 - 29.

More than 230 service members helped repaint two Costa Rican grade schools.

"It was tough working out in the extreme heat," said Yeoman 3rd Class Jamon Jefferson, stationed on Iwo Jima. "Seeing the impact it made on the locals, made it well worth it."

Sailors and Marines also got to spend one-on-one time with the locals, in particular, local school children. They assisted the non-government organization, "Give a Kid a Backpack," in handing out backpacks and school supplies to the local children.

"For me, the highlight of the day was spending genuine time with the children," said Jefferson. "We got the chance meet, play and interact with the kids and teachers. We even served the student's lunch."

"The Costa Rican community got to truly see what service members from the U.S. are like," said Cdr. Timothy Oswald, a chaplain aboard USS Iwo Jima.
