USS Normandy, Jebel Ali, U.A.E. (NNS) -- USS Normandy (CG 60) conducted their change of command ceremony in Jebel Ali, U.A.E., Aug. 31.
Capt. Joseph Creed relieved Capt. Jeffrey T. Griffin as commanding officer of Normandy. Griffin assumed command of the Ticonderoga-class cruiser in August 2008, and led the crew during Operation Unified Response after the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. During the ship's 21 days on station, embarked elements delivered more than 75,142 pounds of food and water, and 3,000 pounds of medical supplies throughout the Port-au-Prince area.
On May 21, 2010 Normandy deployed from her homeport of Norfolk, Va., as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, where she is currently conducting operations in the 5th fleet area of responsibility.
The guest speaker, Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 10, presented Griffin with the Navy Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
"The commanding officer has a critical role in shaping a command and empowering the young men and women who serve on board to be successful," said Driscoll. "Capt. Griffin has done a superb job leading this impressive team."
Griffin expressed his pride in Normandy's crew, thanking them warmly for their professionalism, commitment, and service.
"To my crew, I want to leave you with two words...'Proud' and 'Grateful'," said Griffin. Griffin's next assignment is at the Pentagon as Director of Surface Warfare, N86.
Creed, a 1983 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, looks forward to leading the crew. "Commanding Normandy is an honor, and I will remember that every day I am in command," said Creed.
