USS Virginia Sails to Maine Shipyard for First-of-Class Maintenance

GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- Attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN 774) and her crew of 13 officers and 121 enlisted personnel departed Naval Submarine Base New London Aug. 30 on her way to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.
While at the shipyard, Virginia will undergo a first-of-its-class major availability, consisting of various maintenance projects and several system upgrades.
The City of Portsmouth, N.H., has agreed to officially host Virginia during her maintenance period.
Virginia was built under a teaming arrangement between General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News, Va. She is the sixth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name of the first English colony and the 10th American state.
Virginia was commissioned Oct. 23, 2004 and is the first of the newest class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, built to excel in anti-submarine warfare; anti-ship warfare; strike warfare; special operations; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; irregular warfare; and mine warfare missions. Adept at operating in both the world's shallow littoral regions and deep waters, Virginia directly enables five of the six Navy Maritime Strategy core capabilities — sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence.
