DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- The Navy analyzed current chemical, biological and radiological defense (CBR) capabilities at the first CBR Defense Tabletop Exercise held at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division Aug. 9-13.
During the exercise, 30 CBR defense experts from military and government agencies – including the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Strategic Command, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, U.S. Joint Forces Command and NSWC Dahlgren – reviewed a series of scenarios based upon a major combat operation. The simulated threat scenarios focused on challenges associated with amphibious task force operations; the diverse set of asymmetric weaponry used against U.S. and coalition forces; and projecting military power ashore from the sea base in a CBR-contaminated environment.
"The danger CBR weapons pose are best addressed through the preparation for probable missions and environs," said Michael Purello, NSWCD Dahlgren, CBR Defense Division head. "The projection of future operational needs is congruent with the directive to provide a roadmap through capabilities based analysis."
Results from the exercise will be used for an initial capabilities document to help guide future Navy defense acquisition programs; and also help focus the science and technology community's efforts to address potential gaps.
NSWC Dahlgren is a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command. The warfare center provides research, development, test and evaluation, analysis, systems engineering, integration and certification of complex naval warfare systems related to surface warfare, strategic systems, combat and weapons systems. NSWC Dahlgren also provides system integration and certification for weapons, combat systems and warfare systems in addition to executing other responsibilities as assigned by the Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center.
