MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- The commanding officer of the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5), Capt. David A. Schnell, was relieved of command Aug. 15 by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. Navy 5th Fleet, Vice Adm. Mark I. Fox, due to "loss of confidence" in his ability to command.
The decision to relieve Schnell comes as a result of an investigation into allegations that he acted in an unprofessional manner toward several crew members that was inappropriate, improper and unduly familiar.
The investigation results call into question Schnell's ability to continue to effectively lead his command. As a result, he was relieved due to loss of confidence.
Capt. Mark E. Cedrun, chief of staff for Expeditionary Strike Group 3, will temporarily command USS Peleliu until a permanent replacement is named.
Schnell, who took command of the ship in September 2009, is temporarily reassigned to administrative duties at Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
