US 2nd Fleet Hosts Multinational Training Exercise

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet (C2F) will host an opening ceremony for PANAMAX 2010 at the Ely Hall Conference Center aboard Naval Station Norfolk Aug. 16.
The U.S. Southern Command-sponsored exercise will take place Aug. 18-26 in the vicinity of the Panama Canal, Colombia; Norfolk; Miami, Fla.; and Mayport, Fla.
The exercise will feature components from 12th Air Force in Tucson, Ariz., and U.S. Army South from Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
The purpose of PANAMAX is to enhance regional cooperation and exercise participating nations' ground, naval, air and special forces' ability to respond to threats to the Panama Canal and plan for a major humanitarian assistance and disaster relief event in the region.
PANAMAX 10 provides C2F staff an opportunity to maintain its proficiency as a Joint Task Force-capable headquarter. During the week-long exercise, C2F will assume the role of a joint task force leading a mutlinational force operating under a United Nations resolution. Most of the exercise will be simulated with some live play in Mayport, Panama and Norfolk.
Forty-two representatives from 13 foreign nations will be located at the C2F Maritime Headquarter throughout the exercise.
A total of 18 nations are participating in the exercise: Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, United States and Uruguay.
