SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Surface Line Week (SLW), a 10-day contest sponsored by Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet will begin Aug. 12 and run through Aug. 20.

The annual competition is a marquee event on the San Diego waterfront and features a series of activities dedicated to friendly competition in a variety of seamanship and sporting events.

This year's SLW will have more than 35 commands with nearly 3,000 participants competing in 38 events. The goal is to promote waterfront camaraderie, pride, and professionalism between surface warriors serving in both sea and shore commands.

This year's sporting and professional events include perennial favorites such as basketball, softball and golf, along with damage control, ship handling and marksmanship. Highlighting the six new events added to this year's SLW is the visit, board, search and seizure competition which will culminate in a live boarding to decide the winner.
