Komorowski takes oath of office as new Polish president

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Aug. 6, IRNA -- Bronislaw Komorowski on Friday took the oath of office as Poland's new president succeeding Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in Russia in April, according to Polish news reports.

Komorowski vowed to unify the country across political lines and defend the constitution during the swearing-in ceremony in the parliament, attended by Poland's political and religious leadership.

The ceremony was marked by a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the plane crash in which president Kaczynski and 95 others lost their lives.

The head of the opposition Law and Justice party and the twin brother of the late president, Jaroslaw Kaczynski did not take part in the ceremony.

Kaczynski had lost to Komorowski in a second-round vote on July 4.

Komorowski is the fourth democratically elected Polish president since the collapse of communism in the eastern European country in 1989.
