LEMOORE, Calif. (NNS) -- Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Lemoore's firefighting school held a grand opening ceremony July 14 to officially reopen after being closed for almost two years.

The first group of Sailors to complete training at the reopened facility were from Strike Fighter Squadron 137, the Kestrels. Sailors learned firefighting techniques and then worked together using a recently acquired mobile aircraft firefighting training device (MAFTD) to extinguish a blaze. The MAFTD was transferred from Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Pensacola, to replace CNATTU Lemoore's aging F-2000 firefighting trainer.

For three days the school instructed more than 109 students in aircraft firefighting, providing support to the fleet and the upcoming deployments of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 and CVW 4.

The school was closed for two years due to safety issues and the cost of maintaining the school's aging equipment. It also meant that the school's instructors lost their certification to teach because of the extensive down time.

In May of this year, Naval Air Systems Command's (NAVAIR) inspection and evaluation team inspected the newly acquired MAFTD and certified it ready and safe for training.

In July, the NAVAIR team provided a three-day class for fire school instructors on how to operate and maintain the MAFTD, and certified them to be able to train Sailors on the system. The NETC Safety Office provided a final safety evaluation, clearing the way for training to resume.
