3 NATO Troops Killed in Afghanistan

VOA News
30 July 2010

Three foreign soldiers have died in two separate attacks in Afghanistan.

A NATO statement released Friday says all three soldiers died Thursday, as a result of improvised explosive device attacks in the southern part of the country. The statement did not give the nationalities of the soldiers.

However, the Associated Press reports all three victims were Americans, raising the death toll for U.S. forces to 63 for July, the deadliest month yet in Afghanistan.

In Kabul, anti-American protests erupted Friday after a traffic accident killed at least four Afghan civilians. Witnesses say vehicles carrying foreigners hit a civilian vehicle on the main airport road in the Afghan capital.

Police fired shots into the air to try and disperse the angry demonstrators who shouted "death to America."

In the southern city of Kandahar, police say a motorcycle bomb targeting a parliamentary candidate killed a woman and child on Friday.

Elsewhere in the south, the British defense ministry says British and Afghan troops launched a new offensive Friday in the Sayedebad area of Helmand province to deny insurgents a base from which to launch attacks in the Nad Ali and Marjah areas.

Coalition forces have worked to strengthen security in Marjah following an offensive there earlier this year.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
