UN Removes 5 Taliban From Terror List

VOA News 30 July 2010

United Nations officials say five members of the Taliban have been taken off a U.N. terrorism blacklist.

A U.N. Security Council committee has been reviewing the list that freezes assets and limits travel of those with suspected links to the Taliban and al-Qaida.

Officials say the former Afghan ambassador to the United Nations, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad Awrang, and two deceased officials were among the names removed from the terrorism sanctions list.

Diplomats say Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been calling for the removal of at least 10 former Taliban members from the blacklist, as part of his government's reintegration plan for Taliban fighters willing to lay down their arms.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
