GULFPORT, Miss. (NNS) -- More than 80 members of the Third Naval Construction Regiment (3NCR) out of Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Marietta, Ga., are scheduled to depart July 29 from Naval Construction Base Center Gulfport, Miss., for a six-month deployment to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
Commanded by Capt. Donald Hedrick, 3NCR will be in charge of four naval mobile construction battalions, one Air Force construction battalion, one Air Force engineering command, two Army combat engineer battalions and one Army engineering command.
Three additional Army support units will also be assigned.
3NCR will be responsible for all construction engineering and engineering support in the Afghanistan theater. Engineering support plays a key role in the success of International Security Assistance Force operations as coalition forces continue their efforts to implement counter-insurgency operations.
"As we continue to surge troops into the theater and to construct facilities for forward operating bases, construction engineers will have an awesome task and role ahead of them to ensure the security of coalition forces," said 3NCR Command Master Chief Neal Beard. "We're looking forward to the challenge ahead."
During the past couple of months, 3NCR has conducted specialized training and an aggressive physical conditioning program to prepare troops for the rigorous task ahead of them. In June 2010, 3NCR completed its pre-deployment certification exercise, which validated the regiment's deployable status and its ability to work together as a cohesive team.
"We have a remarkable group of professionals on board, and I'm extremely pleased at the high level of unit morale," said Beard.
