International Donors Pledge Over $1 Billion Aid To Kyrgyzstan

July 27, 2010

BISHKEK -- International donors have agreed to supply $1.1 billion in aid over the next 30 months to help Kyrgyzstan recover from months of political and ethnic violence.

Kyrgyzstan appealed earlier on July 27 for about $1 billion in aid at an international donor conference in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek.

World Bank official Theodore Ahlers told the conference that $600 million will be earmarked for the remaining months of 2010.

Clashes between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in the country's south in June killed at least 316 people and forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes, two months after President Kurmanbek Bakiev was ousted in a bloody uprising.

The violence has severely affected the impoverished country's economy, which is expected to contract about 5 percent this year.
