NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic awarded a $9 million contract to build a new indoor small arms range on Submarine Base New London July 22.
The range will be built by Watermark Environmental Inc. of Lowell, Mass. and replaces an outdoor range that has been in operation since 1950. The new range will have 20 lanes, doubling the current amount on the outdoor range; while ensuring a safer, more efficient operation that will no longer be impacted by unpredictable New England winters.
"This much needed indoor range will ensure our Sailors and Navy Team New London Security Force members receive their required, and vitally important, small arms qualifications in a modern, state-of-the-art facility, said Capt. Marc W. Denno.
The range provides mandatory training for more than 16,000 students annually on weapons that include pistols, rifles, shotgun and M-60 machine guns. The new indoor range will also include an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer that simulates the recoil and noise associated with live firing to familiarize students with the sensation of using a real weapon.
"With big and small projects and demolition and construction, Naval Submarine Base New London continues to transform under our Homeport 21 and Navy Shore Vision 2035 efforts," Denno added.
The range will be used by Sailors on the submarine base, as well as Army and Coast Guard personnel. According to Roger Schalge, the project manager for NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic, construction on this range will be completed in February 2012.
