BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington, D.C., awarded a $16 million firm-fixed price contract modification to Whiting-Turner Contracting Company to outfit two buildings under construction at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Md.

Whiting-Turner received a contract in August 2009 to build two new buildings on the NNMC campus, including a barracks and another building to include a gym, administrative space, parking garage and laboratories.

This work is needed to complete Phase II of the Future Walter Reed National Military Medical Center authorized by the Base Realignment and Closure committee in 2005.

The contract modification pays for the outfitting of a barracks with galley and administrative space, including a gym and fitness equipment.

"Sometimes, contracts for furniture and equipment are issued to a separate contractor, but there is a benefit to letting the construction contractor outfit the spaces," said Darren Morton, a NAVFAC Washington supervisory project manager at the Office in Charge of Construction (OICC) Bethesda.

"The way we are doing this will ensure that NAVFAC turns over a facility that's mission ready from day one," said Morton.

The modification comes a year before scheduled August 2011 construction completion. The total contract amount with Whiting-Turner is $201,185,000.

The additional funds will be used to outfit more than 700,000 square feet of barracks and administrative space.
