BANGOR, Wash. (NNS) -- Submarine Development Squadron 5 officially changed hands at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Wash., July 12.
Sailors and guests watched as Capt. Stuart Munsch turned over command of Submarine Development Squadron 5 to Capt. Brian Howse.
Munsch took command in 2008 of Submarine Development Squadron 5, which is the operational focal point for Navy Deep Submergence, Submarine Rescue, Ocean Engineering and Research and Development Programs.
"For me the best part of every job I've had has always been the people," said Munsch. "However, what made this command even more special were the unique operations completed by the remarkable people with whom I worked. In all that we did, we believed in overcoming the challenges in expanding access in the undersea domain."
When asked about Munsch's departure, Sonar Technician 1st Class Ryan Edwards had only praise for Munsch's motivational leadership style.
"Commodore Munsch has been nothing other than motivational and inspirational to work for," said Edwards. "After 12 years of serving this great Navy I have never been so empowered. I believe that I speak for many when I say that it was Commodore Munsch's leadership that has allowed all of us to succeed."
"The people, the operations and the tremendous variety of our all added up to a lot of professional fun. I'll really miss that daily excitement," said Munsch, when asked what he would miss the most about commanding his staff.
Howse praised Munsch's accomplishments and said he looks forward to the challenges ahead of him.
"I am honored and fortunate to be relieving such an outstanding leader, who has accomplished so much during his tour," said Howse. "I am really looking forward to being back on the waterfront and working with the great squadron staff and the personnel of our submarines and detachments."
Munsch will head to the Pentagon where he will coordinate strategic policy for the Chief of Naval Operations, conduct strategic outreach with partner nations and the other services and oversee the Navy's strategic personnel communications.
