Gaza aid ship docks at Egyptian port
07:44 15/07/2010 MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - A Gaza-bound vessel carrying Libyan humanitarian aid docked at the Egyptian port of El-Arish after giving up its attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade, Jerusalem Post said.
The 92-metre Al-Amal ("Hope" in Arabic) cargo ship left the Greek port of Lavrio on July 10 on a mission to bring aid to Gaza, despite Israeli warnings not to approach the Palestinian territory. It altered its course after being intercepted by the Israeli navy.
"We didn't do anything dramatically different this time than the last," the paper quoted an Israeli government official as saying. He apparently referred to the May 31 attack on a Gaza-bound convoy in neutral waters which left nine people dead.
The ship's passengers will enter the Gaza territory via the Rafah border crossing, and humanitarian cargo will be delivered through the Al-Awja border, Al Jazeera reported.
The ship was chartered by the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation (GICDF), headed by the son of the Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. It carried 2,000 tons of food and medicine, as well as 15 volunteers and 12 crew members onboard.
