STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. (NNS) -- Four members of the Navy's Fleet Survey Team (FST) recently returned from Indonesia where they held an expeditionary hydrography demonstration as part of ongoing cooperative activities with the nation from June 2-19.

The team spent the two and a half weeks in the Strait of Malacca in the North Sumatra region familiarizing the Indonesian Department of Oceanography and Hydrography (DISHIDROS) on technology and techniques for very shallow water surveying in beach areas.

The FST is a rapid-response team with capabilities to conduct quick-turnaround hydrographic surveys anywhere in the world.

"We were extremely satisfied with the success of the engagement because it not only helped the Indonesian Navy but also enhanced our working relationship with them for future cooperation." said Cmdr. Rich Delgado, FST commanding officer.

The goal of the mission was to demonstrate expeditionary survey capabilities so the Indonesian Navy can incorporate them into their own practices. The project began with FST's building an expeditionary survey vehicle (ESV).

"Instead of bringing one of our own ESVs, we brought a boat of opportunity kit that allowed us to build an ESV from a jet ski we rented," said Lt. Gulliver.

Once this was accomplished, the team spent the next couple of days in the water teaching the Indonesians how to drive the ESV and collect data.

The team also conducted geodetic survey on the beaches to demonstrate Global Positioning System capabilities and techniques. The remainder of the time was spent in a classroom, conducting post processing to produce beach planning charts.
