USS NIMITZ, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Nimitz (CVN 68) merged the S-3 and S-5 divisions July 1 to increase efficiency the Supply department aboard the aircraft carrier.

The change should help strengthen the Supply department and could help reduce the number of Sailors needed in the department, according to Chief Ship's Serviceman (SW/AW) Lori Mitchell.

"This helps the Navy down-size, but it still gets the job done. Our Sailors will get an opportunity to test their time management skills, along with their multi-tasking abilities," she said.

Nimitz Supply Department combined services like the barber shop and ships laundry, the S-3 division, with hotel services, the S-5 division.

"Right now, we are they ones trying this out to see if the transition is possible. If it is, then it may become Navywide, "Ship's Serviceman 1st Class (SW/AW) Zina Shannon said.

One of the benefits the merge will provide is moving the ship's culinary specialists who had worked in S-3 and S-5 back to work in the ship's galleys. This is something Nimitz culinary specialists see as a positive..

"Culinary specialists will benefit the most because we'll be back in the galleys and it will help in our advancement because we'll get back to that hands-on experience," said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class (SW) Zulema Najera, who currently works in the ship's S-5 division.

Najera also said the merge is good because with the additional personnel, the work will get done more efficiently.

In a plan that is expected to be implemented Navy-wide, Mitchell thinks the merge makes sense. "All the services we do go hand-in-hand," she said.

Nimitz is the flagship for Carrier Strike Group 11. Nimitz returned home to San Diego March 26 after completing a successful eight-month Western Pacific deployment.
