
'Fightin Mary' Hosts Group of Scientist

KINGS BAY, Ga. (NNS) -- Defense Science Study Group toured a ballistic missile submarine USS Maryland (SSBN 738)(Blue) pierside at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., June 26.
During an extensive refit period, officers and crew of Maryland showcased the submarine to the group of young science and engineering professionals to strengthen the relationship between Defense Science Study Group and the submarine force.
Defense Science Study Group is a program of education and study that introduces outstanding scientists and engineering professors to the challenges facing national security and encourages them to apply their talents to these issues either as government advisors or in their own research. The program bagan in 1986 and is directed by the Institute for Defense Analyses and is sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The Defense Science Study Group visit to Maryland aligns with the submarine crews receiving the best technical training using state-of-the-art facilities, instruction techniques, and certified instructors in fields such as electronics, navigation, weapons systems and nuclear propulsion.
"The crew of USS Maryland always enjoys showing the ship, but this tour was exceptionally exciting based on the technical background of the Defense Science Study Group and the chance to share our ship in greater detail. This group is welcome back anytime," said Lt. Cmdr. Matt Jeffery, executive officer of Maryland Blue.
Commanding officer, Cmdr. John P. Newton, Jr., and crew emphasized the submarine force's commitment to operational excellence and the importance of the strategic deterrent mission.
