BOSTON (NNS) -- For the sixth consecutive year, Boston Navy Week is underway, in conjunction with the 29th annual Boston Harborfest, June 30-July 5.
Navy Week features a series of events ranging from free ship tours to Navy band musical performances. Area residents will also have an opportunity to meet and interact with hundreds of Navy Sailors and learn about the Navy's broad-ranging capabilities and its critical 21st century mission.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, along with Rear Admiral Mark S. Boensel, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, and Weymouth native Rear Adm. Margaret DeLuca Klein, director of Global Operations Officer, Naval Network Warfare Command will participate in various ceremonies and meetings during Navy Week.
In addition, Norfolk-area based amphibious assault ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) and frigate USS Hawes (FFG 53) arrived in Boston, joining the Boston-based USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
Constitution will conduct her annual July 4 turnaround cruise and fire a 21-gun salute at Castle Island. All ships will be open to the public for free guided tours throughout the week.
Crew members from all three ships and local members of the Navy Reserve, will also participate in community service projects at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans and the Boston Rescue Mission. They will also make visits to the children's wards of three local hospitals. More than a dozen sailors and officers participating in Navy Week are Massachusetts natives.
Navy Band Northeast will perform free public concerts and march in the July 4 parades in Pepperell and Stoughton. They will play the national anthem at the Red Sox vs. Orioles baseball game at Fenway Park where Boensel will throw out the first pitch July 2.
Honor guards from Constitution and Whidbey Island will participate the annual Boston Pops July the concert and fireworks on the Esplanade.
The Navy conducts approximately 20 Navy Weeks each year, reaching out to communities across the country to show Americans the investment they have made in their Navy.
