Afghan Protest Against NATO Turns Violent
VOA News 29 June 2010
An Afghan protest against NATO forces turned violent Tuesday, with at least 20 people injured in clashes with police near Kabul.
Demonstrators took to the streets on the outskirts of the capital to protest what residents say was a NATO raid on a local madrassa, or religious school, in Qalacha late Monday.
Protesters claim NATO forces entered the school with a search dog and arrested a number of people. But Afghan police officials say Afghan security personnel - not international troops - were involved in the operation. Five protesters and 15 police officers were injured in Tuesday's demonstration, with reports of shots being fired.
Also, NATO marked one year since a U.S. soldier disappeared in southeastern Paktika province. Taliban insurgents later released videos of the captured Bowe Bergdahl, demanding the release of prisoners in exchange for the soldier.
The military says finding Bergdahl and bringing him home safely is a top priority for U.S. and NATO forces.
Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
